Duck, Death and the Tulip
Winner of an Outstanding Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014, DUCK, DEATH AND THE TULIP makes its Auckland Arts Festival debut in March 2016.
Adapted from the popular children’s book by Wolf Erlbruch, Duck, Death and the Tulip is a beautiful, gentle puppet show about an unlikely friendship between a playful duck and a character who introduces himself as Death.
The simplest of stories on the surface with depth and power beneath, the play tenderly unpacks the mysteries around life and the inevitability of nature taking its course.
We see Duck and Death drinking tea, swimming, climbing a tree, and warming each other. Duck asks a lot of of questions. Duck learns that Death, as a constant companion, is part of life.
Warm, witty and wise, with an original score by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr, directed by Nina Nawalowalo and a sensitive performance by Little Dog Barking’s Peter Wilson, Duck, Death and the Tulip makes a difficult theme accessible for both small children and their grown-up friends.
Little Dog Barking is an award-winning Wellington-based theatre company, established by Peter Wilson in 2010 to produce work specifically aimed at Early Childhood and Lower Primary School aged groups.
‘ I think I had a smile on my face throughout, even when there was a lump in my throat as well’ - Fringereview.co.uk
‘…one of those rare shows that equally delights toddlers and their parents, and reaches out to both’ - Broadway Baby
