Set aside some time to share an exciting evening with consummate showman Rufus Wainwright, a creative, unpredictable and audacious composer-performer who has wooed thousands from Avignon to Adelaide and Toronto to Tokyo. In a night of wonderful musical alchemy, this much-loved maestro celebrates his ‘main squeezes’ – opera and orchestras – and his passion for dramatics, divas and show songs.

In the concert’s first part, there are selections from Prima Donna, Wainwright’s first opera. In front of elegant images on a large screen by the Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli starring Cindy Sherman, three classical singers, accompanied by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, relay the moving story of fictional diva Régine St. Laurent as she approaches the end of her brilliant career and deals with her demons.

In the second part, Wainwright takes us back to 1961 when show business legend Judy Garland performed a concert at NYC’s Carnegie Hall that reignited her career and that solidified her status as an icon for the LGBTQ community. Wainwright carries on Garland's legacy with his signature showmanship, energy, and style, delivering a selection of her most beloved hits such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Puttin’ on the Ritz and Chicago.
